Midsomer Norton Rugby Football Club has submitted a planning application for the refurbishment of its clubhouse and the installation of floodlighting on club pitches at Norton Down — marking a significant step forward in the club’s long-term vision.

The proposals form part of a phased development project, setting out an ambitious but achievable plan to improve facilities, support participation growth, and secure the club’s future at the heart of the local community.

The plans have been shaped directly by consultation with club members, volunteers, and users, ensuring that the proposed facilities reflect the needs of players and the wider community both now and in the future.

Central to the vision is the club’s continued commitment to remaining at Norton Down, a site that sits at the centre of a growing community and has been home to local rugby for generations.

The proposed improvements include:

  • Refurbishment and modernisation of the clubhouse

  • Installation of floodlighting to safely extend training and playing opportunities throughout the year

  • Enhanced and fully updated changing and gym facilities built to modern safeguarding standards

  • Improved accessibility and usability for community groups and visitors

  • Significant improvements to provision for growth in participation through Mixed Ability, women’s and girls’ sport.

Submitting the planning application represents an important milestone. In practical terms, securing planning permission allows the club to begin actively pursuing external funding, grants, and partnership investment — as many funding organisations require planning consent before financial support can be considered.

“This application sets out a clear goal for what Midsomer Norton RFC can become. It reflects what our members told us they need, demonstrates our commitment to Norton Down, and establishes a vision for facilities that match the growth of our club and community.” said Alex Davis, Chairman of Midsomer Norton.

“Planning permission is the foundation. It allows us to seek funding and begin the hard work of delivering improvements in phases over time. This is a long-term investment in rugby, in volunteers, and in the wider community.”

The club emphasises that this is only the beginning of the journey.  The project is intentionally ambitious.

As a volunteer-led community sports club, Midsomer Norton RFC sees the project as an investment in health, inclusion, youth development, and social connection across the town.

Further updates will be shared with members and residents as the planning process progresses.
