Old Bristolians RFC

Midsomer Norton 30 - 24 Old Bristolians

An excellent game of rugby brightened up a drizzly, windy Mendip afternoon between two committed talented sides. Old Bristolians looked to use their powerful runners and tactical kicking in the first half with the wind in their favour. It was Norton who claimed the first points from the boot of Taylor however, before Old B’s fly half Davis put in an excellent 50 -22 kick which provided them with a 5 meter lineout from which they scored a converted text-book catch and drive.

Initially the teams were well-matched in the set-piece but Norton gained more control over the match with the front row of Jenner, Edgell and Swift using their experience and Church beginning to dominate the lineout. Continuity in attack provided Taylor with another 3 points before captain Fear scored in the corner after some fine handling and strong running. Number 8 Button had a tremendous game especially in defence and he was able to finish off another Norton move to build the lead further.

It was refreshing to see Norton attacking with width and pace, constantly keeping the opposition guessing. Both sides scored one more try before the break, with Norton’s coming from Taylor who scored under the posts after sustained pressure. Half time score 20 v 14.

Old Bristolians started the second period in fine style and asked questions of the home side’s defence. The tackling and commitment was superb however, and although the next score was from the visitors, taking advantage of an overlap after sustained pressure, it was this defensive effort that kept Norton’s noses in front.

Schuster and Watts in the centre were dangerous all afternoon, and it was from a Schuster break and a high tackle that Taylor was able to build the lead with another penalty. Then came a spectacular try to put Norton in charge. Playing at pace and creating space, the ball found its way to Fear and the second row put in a pin-point cross-field kick to Knight on the wing who gathered and offloaded to the supporting Smith to dive over to the delight of the crowd.

The final moments saw Old Bristolians grab another score which ensured two well-deserved bonus points. The final score was 30 v 24 and the crowd were thoroughly entertained during and after the game.
